Lichen is harvested from small sticks and twigs, which are trimmed to convenient sizes for enclosure use while preserving as much lichen as possible.
Each batch is quarantined and observed in a special terrarium, then stored in a freezer below 0°F for a minimum of one week to help eliminate pests, including mites, while preserving the natural structure and condition of the lichen. Some hobbyists attempt to cultivate lichen in bioactive environments, though results may vary.
Many Porcellio and Mspecies are particularly fond of grazing on lichen and will readily consume it over time.
Lichen is intended as a supplemental food source and should not be relied upon as a complete diet.
For best results, store unused lichen in the freezer when not in use. Freezing helps keep the lichen dormant, preserves its natural condition during long-term storage, and helps keep potential hitchhikers, including mites, at bay.
When needed, simply remove the desired amount and return the remainder to the freezer.
